Energy Seminar, Thursday, Feb. 24th

How is the Cold Air getting in and the Heated Air getting out of your Home?

The Town of Ashby’s Energy Efficiency Committee will present an Energy Seminar at the Ashby Free Public Library on Thursday, February 24, 2011 from 7:00-8:00 PM

The program will concentrate on Air Infiltration. It will show homeowners where to look for the “holes” in their houses which are responsible for higher heating bills. The presenter will be Jim Hubert. He has over 35 years in the building trade and a concentrated interest in energy efficient homes.

Questions like “What’s the best energy saving home improvement project I could do?”—New Windows—Not Always! How about Energy Audits are they worth it? Should I add more insulation, how about caulk, or spray foam? These subjects and more will be addressed.

So join us and bring your questions!

RESULTS OF SPECIAL TOWN MEETING

January 25, 2011

The warrant was returned to the Town Clerk at 6:30 PM .

With a quorum present, the Moderator Nancy Chew called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.

The warrant showed it had been properly served.

The motion was made and seconded to waive the reading of the warrant, and so voted.

The rules of the meeting were read.

SPECIAL TOWN MEETING ARTICLES

Article 1. The motion was made and seconded to transfer the sum of $5,000.00 from the Town Accountant Salary account to the Clerical Wages account for the purpose of paying Accounting Clerk and Administrative Assistant to the Police Department wages.

VOTE: UNANIMOUS

Article 2. The motion was made and seconded to transfer the sum of $170.00 from Free Cash to the Prior Year Bills account for the purpose of paying for a prior year Emergency Management Services bill.

VOTE: UNANIMOUS

Article 3. The motion was made and seconded that the Town of Ashby appropriate the sum of Fifty Thousand Dollars ($50,000) for a feasibility study for window and roof repairs at the Ashby Elementary School, located at 911 Main Street, Ashby, Massachusetts, said sum to be expended under the direction of the School Building Committee, and to meet said appropriation the sum of $50,000 shall be transferred from Free Cash; that the Town acknowledges that the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s (“MSBA”) grant program is a non-entitlement, discretionary program based on need, as determined by the MSBA, and any costs the Town incurs in excess of any grant approved by and received from the MSBA shall be the sole responsibility of the Town.

The motion was made and seconded to amend Article 3 by inserting the words “by the Board of Selectmen” after the words “to be expended ”.

VOTE ON AMENDED ARTICLE: YES- 20 NO-42 DEFEATED

VOTE ON ORIGINAL ARTICLE: UNANIMOUS

The motion was made and seconded to dissolve the Special Town Meeting at 8:03 PM , and so voted.

The guest speaker is Carter Scott of Transformations. He is the owner of this successful construction company which specializes in energy efficient homes and home renovations.

Working with architects, engineers and Hers raters he has successfully built homes in
Townsend, MA and throughout the state, which have achieved nearly zero energy use status.

Carter will explain his successful use of the Stretch Code and the government funding available to offset the additional cost in building a more Energy Efficient Home.

SPECIAL TOWN MEETING ARTICLES

Article 1. To see if the Town will vote to transfer the sum of $5,000.00 from the Town Accountant Salary account to the Clerical Wages account for the purpose of paying Accounting Clerk and Administrative Assistant to the Police Department wages, or take any action thereon.

Site Plan for 873 Main Street

DLR Realty Trust has submitted an Site Plan Review application for the commercial development of 873 Main St. This is the old Charron Real Estate Building between Town Hall and the Wyman Tavern. The application is to construct 2 buildings on the site, a market and restaurant in one and a police station in the other. The link above is to the plans and documents submitted with the application.

The Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the application. The date of the hearing has not been set as of this posting.
